The next night. Lily and Abby and Katie talking on the porch, Marlaina falls asleep on Abby's lap. Aron comes out and gets her, carries her inside and up to bed before the mosquitoes can start biting.
Dray at the kitchen table doing homework, listening to iPod, looks up when Aron enters carrying his sister, looks away. Remorse. Anger. Helplessness.
Later that night. Dray slips out the back door, meets a waiting car.
Aron and Lou's bedroom.
Aron sits up in bed. Lou is at the door, pulling on her clothes. "He left again. I heard the car."
Aron. "Are you in uniform?"
Lou Tired. "Go back to bed, sweetheart. I've got a party to crash."
Aron climbs out, kisses her. "Not alone, you don't."
Lou. Close to tears. "I don't know what to do with that boy."
Aron pulls her into his arms, kisses her forehead. "I think we hold onto each other and love him the best we know how. And sometimes that means letting him live with his choices, and sometimes that means going after him."
Lou. "And tonight?"
Aron. Sighs. "Tonight we go get our boy. Together."
